GDI constructed this 140,000 sf manufacturing facility for Sirmax, an Italian-owned Tier 2 supplier of plastic resin material. The project was the first for Sirmax in North America. The building was constructed on a brownfield site in Anderson, IN, which was formerly a General Motors plant, which was razed and remediated by Racer Trust. There was much coordination with Racer Trust, Sirmax, City and State officials and various environmental attorneys and consultants during the remediation and compliance process.
GDI purchased the site, subdivided and sold a parcel to Sirmax and started construction in April 2015, with building completion in November 2015, allowing Sirmax time for equipment installation prior to a February 2016 production start date. GDI also coordinated and managed the construction of a CSX rail spur, which was crucial to the Sirmax operation.
The building is constructed of load-bearing precast concrete walls, a conventional steel structure and includes 6,800 sf of two story office, an ESFR sprinkler system, 6,000 amps of electrical service and a 170′ long utility trench pit. The success of this project brings a growing international company and new jobs to Anderson and also allows for the sustainable reuse of a brownfield site.
The City of Anderson has worked on numerous, successful projects with GDI and have found them to be an instrumental partner in attracting new business to the City. GDI’s conceptual budgeting prowess and their efficient design, construction and development capabilities makes them a tremendous asset when attracting prospective national and multi-national companies.
